Monk Seals and the Northwestern Hawaiian Island

On Saturday, October 10, Pi Beta Phi members, friends, and invited guests gathered for a potluck dinner at Pam Ednie's home in Aina Haina. There were many delicious dishes: chili, sandwiches, chicken nuggets, fruit salad, bean salad, pasta salad, couscous, and apple pie.

A true "Pi Phi in Paradise," Brenda Becker gave a visual presentation of her work in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands studying the endangered Hawaiian monk seal - Hawaii's State Mammal. We learned what it's like to prepare and live on on a remote island and key findings of the monk seals gleaned from decades of research.

Cookie Shine Kickoff

With our alumnae club turning 90 years old in 2016, our theme this year is "Pi Phis in Paradise: Celebrating 90 Years of Friendship." The Cookie Shine is a tradition that brings memories back into focus. It shows the heritage and sisterhood shared by Pi Phis all over the world.

The first Cookie Shines (130 years ago) resembled picnics with each member bringing a contribution. In a similar fashion, we asked each member to bring their favorite salad ingredient to contribute to our "Friendship Salad" and included picnic items in our cookie shine.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Cookie Shine on September 5!

HAPA Luncheon Update!

Proud moment to be a Pi Phi!

The HAPA Scholarship Luncheon was held on Saturday, May 2, at the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club. This annual event celebrates the organization's success in providing academic scholarships and creating a network of women leaders in Hawaii.

Reason #1: Our very own Tyre Conrey was presented as the 2015-2016 HAPA Recording Secretary during the introduction of the slate.

Reason #2: For the third year in a row, a collegiate Pi Phi has won a HAPA scholarship! There were 30 applicants and 5 recipients.

Wakako Horiuchi is this year's recipient of the Jacque Law Scholarship. Wakako graduated from Sacred Hearts Academy in 2012 and is currently attending Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. She was initiated into the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women in 2013 and has served as the Vice President of Fraternity Development as well as the Health and Wellness Chair and on the Initiation Committee. In addition, she works as an undergraduate research assistant at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in a neurology lab. Wakako is also a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician and volunteers on the Hopkins Emergency Response Unit, serves as the Internal Vice President of the Nu Rho Psi Undergraduate Neuroscience Society, a dancer on the JHU Eclectics, and a member of Hopkins Hawaii Ohana. After graduation, Wakako plans to go to medical school to pursue her dream of becoming a pediatric emergency physician.

Monmouth Duo Social

The Pi Beta Phi Honolulu Alumnae Club and Kappa Kappa Gamma Hawaii Alumnae Association hosted an informal social for their members. Spouses and significant others were also invited to attend. Guests were asked to bring a beverage of their choice and "paired" appetizer to share with the group.

Mitch (Kappa Kappa Gamma) and Sandy (Pi Beta Phi) enjoy the sun set outside.
